HOW POLARIZED LENSES WORK

Polarized lenses filter out reflected glare

Most glare comes from light reflected off smooth surfaces like water, wet roads and glass. Polarized lenses are designed to filter out exactly that light.

How polarized lenses reduce glare Sunlight vibrates in many directions. When it reflects off water it becomes horizontally polarized glare. A polarizing filter that only passes vertical light blocks that glare. 1 2 3
  1. Sunlight vibrates in all directions

Sunlight travels while vibrating in many directions: up and down, side to side and diagonally.

  2. Reflection lines it up horizontally

Light reflected off water or wet roads becomes strongly horizontally polarized. That's glare.

  3. The filter blocks horizontal light

The filter in a polarized lens lets only vertical light through, so reflected glare is blocked and only comfortable light reaches your eyes.

WHEN & WHERE

Where polarized lenses make the biggest difference

Polarized lenses reduce light reflected from smooth surfaces, so the difference is greatest around water, wet roads, glass and snow.

  • Driving

Cuts glare from wet roads and from the glass and hoods of cars ahead.

  • Fishing

With less surface reflection, it's easier to see into the water.

  • Beach & water sports

Softens glare off sparkling water and bright sand.

  • Snow & winter hikes

Takes the edge off strong sunlight reflected by snow.

  • City & everyday

Reduces reflections from glass buildings and car windows.

  • Camping & lakesides

More comfortable vision by lakes and streams.

Good to know

  • Phone, navigation and dashboard screens may look darker or show rainbow patterns. This is a normal property of polarizing filters.
  • Take them off at night or in tunnels.
  • Never look directly at the sun, even with sunglasses.
